It’s Memorial Day weekend and we’re unprepared.

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

It’s that time of year but unlike last year my brother and I have not been doing push-ups all week. We’re unprepared.

It looks like this summer both of us will be hoping to not run into anyone we know on the beaches of Belmar, Pt. Pleasant, Ortley and if the summer throws us a curveball…Sleaszside Heights.

The things we’re looking forward to this year are stuffed peppers, fried meatballs, and prosciutto on the beach, crabs at the house, sharing a single bedroom with 7 people, old-school nike’s, spending a week’s salary on gas, nj turnpike traffic jams and running into these guys…

In case you missed tony’s funeral…

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Speculation over The Sopranos ending continues and today we have someone who actually seems to know what he’s talking about. Bob Harris has written fiction for tv and in his post, ‘Tony Soprano didn’t just get whacked; he practically got a funeral,’ Harris walks us through all the clues that David Chase eluded to when he said, "it’s all there.”

Harris points out symbolism in the final episode to the last supper, catholic funeral rituals, color schemes and more and it all points to tony’s death and suggests that the last episode may even have been tony’s funeral. Awesome.

Fyi, this is the opening shot of the last episode…

Openshot

Here are a few more examples of the insight you will find in Harris’ post…

Tony, Carmella and AJ each eat onion rings in the manner that one would eat a communion wafer at a Catholic funeral. Chase made sure shots of each made it to the final edit.

Communion

This shot of Tony seated at the restaurant is laid out in the same way as the last supper…

Lastsup

…Harris explains this as, ‘Another strikingly obvious bit of information: shortly before his
death, David Chase very briefly frames Tony in a shot that visually
quotes the Last Supper (one-point perspective; special holy light from
above (more obvious in the footage than the grab); a long horizontal
base supporting triangular composition, human forms on both sides of
the subject; etc.).’

I wonder how long it’s going to take before jobs are being sent to passive candidates’ coffee tables.

I installed Ubuntu Linux last week on my home pc. It was an easy decision. Windows was too vulnerable to viruses and spyware. Macs are too expensive and Ubuntu is super easy to use and fast.

Today, I need to applaud Microsoft for its launch of Microsoft Surface which seems really cool.

I wonder how long it’s going to take before jobs are being sent to passive candidates’ coffee tables.

Yahoo! commercials

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Jim Durbin posted a Yahoo! Answers commercial on Durbin Media’s Brandstorming blog.

Here’s another cool one:

It’s Memorial Day weekend at the Jersey shore and my brother’s been doing push-ups for the past 48 hours straight.

Friday, May 25th, 2007

It’s here and we’re ready.

Beaters have been bleached, pressed and packed. 18k gold-plated chains have been re-plated, polished and packed.

Extra-dark tanning oil? That’s been put into a separate zip lock plastic bag to keep it, and last year’s sand still stuck on the bottle, from leaking onto our beaters.

The car’s polished, packed and has a full tank of $2.98/gal regulated unleaded gas.

We’re all set. Enjoy your weekend.

New Blog Design!

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

I’ve been working on redesigning the blog and have made some pretty significant progress. At the end of this post are links to the mostly-free resources that helped me.

320 Homepage should be live soon. Displays featured post, entry to blog and entry to video section.

Blogprev New blog design live next week. Noticeable differences are display ads and new blogroll pipe.

VIDEO SECTION
(no preview available). Provides visitors with user-generated search engine/recruitment advertising related videos; with more of a focus on educational videos rather than everyone’s product pitches.

Industry consultants can use this section to generate awareness of themselves by contributing to the education of our marketplace. If content builds fast enough and this turns into a great source of information for our marketplace than it should be easy for me to get support in promoting this on a larger scale.

You think Jim Stoud will consider adding Job|SearchMarketing to The Day In Recruiting if the video section does a good job of building more awareness of his, ‘The Recruiters Guide,’ series of training videos? Hmm..

DICTIONARY WIKI
(no preview available) The definitions blog will be transformed into a wiki with MediaWiki. This will be a user-generated recruitment advertising dictionary. It will help us all come together to educate the market.

In turn, it will deliver each contributer with the recognition and links you deserve for your contributions.  This is taking a while because Yahoo! Web Hosting doesn’t support the version of PHP that’s required for MediaWiki.

Here are the mostly-free resources that I used. Enjoy:

  • Typepad Hacks: Hacking typepad is easier than I thought. This is a great blog and resource.
  • Web 2.0 hot-to web design guide: Cool blog. Great for brainstorming and planning layout.
  • Rubberball: Royalty-free images.
  • Yahoo! Pipes: I’ve created a blogroll pipe. This will parse JSM’s blogroll for search engine related topics and display 7 links to those posts. Providing JSM readers with more relevant content and JSM blogroll with good links and  more engaged readers.
  • Kent Brewster’s Badger: This app created by Kent Brewster outputs the content of your pipe onto your site.
  • MediaWiki: The same wiki software that wikipedia is built on.

The night the lights went out; an experiment in blogger influence.

This should be interesting…

My bedroom light blew out last night. The only replacement bulb that I have at home is a typical 80 watt energy hog. Rather than install that, I figured I’d see if we could use my blog to engage the busy CEO of a large corporation and influence him to buy me a replacement light bulb.

Think I’m nuts? Here’s why I think we can pull this off.
On 6 A.M., the blog of Edelman CEO Richard Edelman, Richard mentioned pro bono work that Edelman is doing for the 18seconds movement. 18seconds is an effort to get organizations to be more energy efficient. For their part, Edelman is buying a CFL bulb for each employee.

Now…I’m not an organization or an Edelman employee but I am willing to be more conservative with energy and I am a blogger and after all, it was Edelman’s own whitepaper, ‘A Corporate Guide to the Global Blogsphere,’ that said, ‘people who read blogs are more likely to act to attempt to influence an issue.’ So this attempt confirms Edelman’s conclusion. It was that same whitepaper that said, ‘…blogs reach "influencers" in each market.‘ Your participating makes you influential and confirms that conclusion.

We’re confirming his work. He’s gotta buy me a bulb! I think we can get this done. All we have to do is make ourselves visible to Richard Edelman by clicking this link to visit his blog. He should notice a spike in traffic and question where its coming from. So Click Away. The more times you click and visit his blog(from here)…the better.

Richard, if you would like to buy me a CFL bulb you can send it to Yahoo! HotJobs, Attn. Matt Martone, 45 West 18th St. 6th Floor, New York, NY 10011. Thanks.

ABOUT EDELMAN

DISCLAIMER
Yahoo! is appearnetly hosting the 18seconds site. I just found this out a minute ago when I clicked the link to the 18seconds site.

Next week is going to be big.

Friday, February 9th, 2007

So much to talk about next week. Here’s a look at what’s to come…

  • Google’s giving away free landing pages to recruitment advertisers. link
  • Here comes the talk of ‘landing pages,’ that I’ve been looking forward to. In the mean time, check out this, dated but informative, whitepaper.

Regarding Da’Hoo…

I think its pretty safe to assume that there are some pretty strong competitive advantages developing for recruiters who master search marketing and for service companies that support employers’ SEM(r) efforts.

All this and make sure valentines day is good enough to keep me out of the dog house for a few months…busy.

Off-Topic: Baby Panda Sneeze Video

Friday, February 9th, 2007

It’s Friday and this is hysterical. Press play and turn your sound up. This tiny panda has a pretty big sneeze.

I think its relevant here because the video demonstrates the disruptive effects a content rich/sales pitch limited corporate communications strategy can have can building awareness or influencing an industry.
